Albert Berg was born in 1864. He contracted spinal meningitis as a child leaving him deaf. Berg became the first football coach at Purdue in 1887 at the age of twenty-three. It is said he was chosen as coach because he knew about football from his days as a student player at Princeton. From the description of Albert Berg papers, 1886-1945. (Purdue University Library).
